The Park Royal Residential Development was a significant construction project involving the erection of tower cranes for a three-block residential complex. The project spanned varying heights, with buildings ranging from 36 to 96 meters in height. The successful completion of this project required strategic planning, careful crane selection, and efficient crane installation and removal procedures.

Diverse Heights: The three-block complex had buildings of different heights, ranging from 36 to 96 meters. This required a tailored approach to crane selection and placement to ensure optimal coverage for all construction areas.

Height and Load Considerations: Erecting and operating tower cranes at such heights presented challenges related to structural stability, wind loads, and lifting capacities. Ensuring safety and stability throughout the construction process was crucial.

Freestanding Crane Erection: The installation of the Moritsch RTM280 freestanding crane on the highest residential block, reaching a height of 102 meters, required careful planning to ensure stability and safety during the erection process.

Site Logistics: Coordinating crane erection, operation, and removal within an active construction site demanded meticulous logistical planning to minimize disruptions and maximize efficiency.

To address the challenges presented by the project, the construction team strategically chose and erected a combination of tower cranes.

Terex CTL 140s: Five Terex CTL 140 tower cranes were erected across the three blocks. These 10-tonne luffing cranes with high luffing speeds provided the necessary lifting capacity and flexibility for the diverse construction needs. They were installed at heights of up to 66 meters, allowing them to efficiently cover various floors within the buildings.

Moritsch RTM280 Freestanding Crane: For the tallest residential block, a Moritsch RTM280 freestanding crane was chosen due to its impressive height and lifting capacity capabilities. With a height of 102 meters, a 45-meter jib, and a maximum capacity of 12 tonnes, this crane was well-suited for the unique requirements of the highest building.

Terex CTL 140s: The Terex CTL 140 cranes were erected on each block using standard tower crane erection procedures. Their flexibility in height and luffing capabilities allowed them to efficiently serve different floors of the buildings during construction.

Moritsch RTM280 Freestanding Crane: Erecting the Moritsch RTM280 freestanding crane at 102 meters required a saddle crane approach. This method allowed for the safe and controlled erection of the crane to its full height. The crane was equipped with a 45-meter jib, providing extensive coverage across the construction site.

The coordination of crane installations and removals was a critical aspect of the project:

To remove the Moritsch RTM280 after project completion, a road closure was arranged. A Liebherr LTM 1000 mobile crane was employed to dismantle and remove the crane safely.

The Terex CTL 140s provided efficient lifting solutions for the varied heights of the blocks, while the Moritsch RTM280 freestanding crane met the unique demands of the tallest residential building. In collaboration with our client, Hollybrook, we undertook the challenge of installing precast cladding panels on a new Travelodge hotel project. These panels, weighing up to 20 tonnes each, required a robust lifting solution to ensure efficient and safe installation. Through innovative thinking and expertise, Heathrow Cranes proposed the use of a Saez SL730 crane, ultimately providing a reliable and effective solution to the complex task at hand.

Heavy Precast Panels: The installation of precast cladding panels, each weighing up to 20 tonnes, demanded a crane with a substantial lifting capacity and reach.

Height and Reach: The installation required a crane capable of reaching heights and distances that matched the building's dimensions, ensuring full coverage of the construction area.

Site Constraints: The limited space and tight site conditions posed challenges for crane setup and operation.

Heathrow Cranes identified the Saez SL730 crane as the optimal solution for the precise requirements of the project.

Saez SL730 Crane: The Saez SL730 crane was chosen due to its remarkable specifications and lifting capabilities. Erected to a height of 36 meters with a jib length of 50 meters, this crane provided the necessary height and reach for efficient panel installation.

Lifting Capacity: With a maximum lifting capacity of 36 tonnes and the ability to lift 14.5 tonnes at a 50-meter radius, the Saez SL730 was perfectly suited for handling the heavy precast panels.

The selection of the Saez SL730 crane for this project yielded several key benefits:

Efficiency: The crane's high lifting capacity and impressive reach reduced the number of lifts required for panel installation, leading to increased overall project efficiency.

Space UtiliSation: Despite the limited site space, the crane's strategic placement allowed for efficient panel installation while maximizing available area.

Safety: The Saez SL730's advanced capabilities ensured safe and controlled lifting, minimizing the risks associated with conventional methods.

As construction sites in London become increasingly constrained and space becomes a premium, the adoption of off-site manufacturing methods is expected to become standard practice. Prefabrication offers advantages such as reduced project timelines, decreased on-site labor requirements, and improved safety compared to traditional construction methods.

The Saez SL730 crane boasts impressive specifications that enhance its versatility and efficiency:

Lifting Speed: Capable of shifting a load of 1,725 kg at a speed of 248 meters per minute.

Maximum Capacity: Able to handle loads of up to 6,700 kg at a 70-meter radius using 2 falls, or 5,500 kg using 4 falls.

The successful installation of precast cladding panels on the Travelodge hotel project through the utilization of the Saez SL730 crane underscores Heathrow Cranes' commitment to innovative solutions and technical excellence. This case study serves as a testament to the benefits of strategic crane selection in overcoming complex construction challenges and achieving project success.

Heathrow Cranes successfully executed a complex project involving the provision and installation of a state-of-the-art RTM280 twelve-tone saddle jib tower crane at the CPL construction site. The tower crane, despite facing site constraints, achieved an impressive full height of 192 meters. However, due to these constraints, the initial erection of the tower crane was limited to a height of 54 meters.

One of the major challenges faced during the project was the site's constraints, which prevented the tower crane from reaching a higher erection height on a single installation. To overcome this challenge, Heathrow Cranes demonstrated their expertise by installing ties at a lower level to help the project progress. Heathrow Cranes also aided with the designing and manufacturing of a bespoke climbing frame. This climbing frame was meticulously designed to ensure that it wouldn't interfere with the completed building during its descent due to deflection.

In order to reach the final height of 192 meters, a systematic approach was employed. Six levels of collars and ties were meticulously installed to facilitate the tower crane's ascent. The project required a total of 32 mast sections, 18 ties, and 6 collars to be seamlessly integrated.

Through a combination of innovative engineering and meticulous planning, Heathrow Cranes successfully overcame the site constraints to realise the tower crane's full potential. The project not only showcased the company's technical prowess but also highlighted their commitment to delivering solutions tailored to the specific needs of each project.

This case study exemplifies Heathrow Cranes' ability to adapt to challenging circumstances, employ innovative solutions, and ensure the successful installation of advanced tower crane systems.

Sequential Crane Erection and Utilization:

At the commencement of the project, Heathrow Cranes expertly erected a Moritsch RTL 325 tower crane, towering at 54 meters with a 45-meter jib, situated at the rear of the construction site. This initial tower crane installation laid the foundation for subsequent activities. This crane was pivotal in erecting a Jost 158 crane on a specialized cruciform base, ingeniously placed on a logistics slab.

As the project advanced, Heathrow Cranes strategically orchestrated the tower crane erection phases to coincide with the progress of the reinforced concrete (RC) frame and the completion of the slipform. This synchronization allowed for optimal efficiency. With the completion of the RC frame and the placement of two grillages on each core, the RTL 325 tower crane was skillfully used to dismantle the Jost JTL158 and install two Moritsch RTL 195 tower cranes.

The innovative use of the initial RTL 325 tower crane to install subsequent tower cranes proved to be a cost-effective and time-saving approach. By leveraging the existing tower crane infrastructure for installation, the need for road closures that would have been required for mobile crane installations was circumvented. This strategic approach ensured that the client saved both money and valuable project time.

One of the challenges faced was the close proximity of the construction site to Network Rail infrastructure. To adhere to safety regulations, all tower cranes were de-rated to ensure a safe distance was maintained, highlighting Heathrow Cranes' commitment to safety and compliance.

Upon completion of the project, Heathrow Cranes demonstrated their proficiency in efficiently dismantling the tower cranes. The RTL 325 tower crane was dismantled using the RTL 195 crane. Subsequently, the RTL 195 tower crane was dismantled by the other. The final crane was removed through a road closure in conjunction with a mobile crane.

Heathrow Cranes' meticulous planning, strategic coordination, and innovative approach to tower crane utilization not only ensured a seamless construction process but also delivered substantial cost and time savings for the client. This case study exemplifies Heathrow Cranes' ability to optimize tower crane operations, resulting in successful project outcomes.
